Task 3: Type Exploration
Research & Idea Exploration
-
So the thing about this assignment was making a typefont that
would be related to our topic of interest such as our majors , and
as the one that i picked was entertainment design, i have to make
something that are related to our topic of interest. so we were
told to make a proposal of what what we wanted to do for this
final assignment.
- For this assignment i am thinking of alot of things one of it making a letter font using a cookie and make an advertisement of a cookie with it however with the number of projects and assignment i have from other subject i decided that it'll be wise to make things that would safe me more time, plus my parents want me home asap so idk if i can do alot of great things that needs time and patience.
Proposal of the ideas :

I really like how my Key Artwork turns out and always wanted to
create my own brand to sell street fashion apparel and stuffs, and
im planning to carry on the project using this concept and improve
it when im done with uni or have a free time, and since i might
wanna carry on with the project i might need to make my own font for
expansion of branding cause i dont wanna use font that are not
commercially used on the internet, i can use it for the website or
even ads/posters promoting my product
the concept of my brand is pretty much playful 8bit, game adding
street into it so its gonna be like a neo-street concept with the
pixel game concept with street style, pretty much like a
Harajuku/Tokyo tech type of thing.
afterward, i do some research on pixel fonts and try making
sketches in class due to me not having a laptop (oops), so rather
than not doing anything i tried sketching on how i shud do the font,
here are the references i used as i sketched the font.
- After looking at references i start doing sketches, i will still go with the same concept i had with the key artwork sketch i had on the previous assignment, since i got lazy sketching the rest i just continued the rest on adobe illustration and straight up did digitalization over there.
Digitalization
Adobe Illustrator
-
I started by making the guide for each letters and make the uppercase letters to began with.
-
Height of letters :
- Ascender line : 560 pt
- Cap line : 560 pt
- Median line : 453 pt
- Baseline : 0 pt
- Descender line : -119 pt
Fig 1.4 Uppercase Digitalization Rough Ver [Week 11 (06/11/2023)]
- making the uppercase letters are easy but then when i start making the lower case letters its kind of getting challenging cause even in previous semester i only made uppercase letters cause in my opinion it was easier

(Outline) [Week 11 (07/11/2023)]
-
Some of it went over the guide but then since im thinking
its still the rough ver i leave it be cause i will refine it
later and just continue with numbers and symbols
afterwards.

-
Afterwards i start refining the letters in class, adding round
edges on every letters, and some modifications on the
lowercase letters so that it fits the grid and guidelines.

FontLab 8
- After making all the letters , numbers and symbols i started exporting everything into fontlab 8, as always there isnt any issues with exporting the fonts into fontlab and i just started kerning the letters.

Task 3 : Application
Letter Presentation
-
For letter presentation im thinking of making the letter
presentation just like the example Mr.Vinod gave us which is
the Voodoo type specimen, i think it look really good and
cool and i would like to make my own version just like that.
previously on the kerning on fontlab i tried testing all the
letters and symbols and i decide that i will use the words i
used on the Fig 1.15
-
I decided to make 5 and thinking i would like to make my
own inspired by the game that i love to play which is
pokemon, in NDs u will be brought into a keyboard where u
were asked what your name was and i think i will use that
reference as and example

presentation [Week 14
(29/11/2023)]
after making the first page i start making
template for the rest to showcase all the
letters, starting with uppercase, lowercase,
number and ending with symbols.

Reflection
-
Experience : In this assignment basically i learn more about
making fonts and also making concepts for fonts and everything, back
then when we were doing the same assignment in previous semester i
was still lacking and needs more to learn, but nowadays since we
have more freedom its more fun and the way we are allowed and freely
to do with the topic of interest we chosen, overall this assignment
is still challenging however much more fun to do
-
Observations : Looking at everyones idea, i felt like mine
wasnt the best and sometimes i got this feeling that my topic is
just not as amazing as others, cause i felt like everyone that i
know are doing so many unique things, there were alot of times where
i felt the imposter syndrome however it got cleared up as days
passed by cause at the end of the day everyones work are different
and unique on their own way and it doesnt mean mine is less good. so
i learn alot about criticizing myself and doing self check.
- Findings : I learned about fontlab 8 and getting even better at using it, i also learn again about making fonts and this time i understand it way better than the previous semester cause last semester i was doing what we were told without deeper understanding, and now that i learned even more i can feel more confident if in the future i had to make another fonts, altho it wont be automatically "professional" its fine its part of learning process lmao, at least it gets better and better and the improvement is what matters :]
