Final Compilation

For the first week we were basically told to get some ideas for our project, i start brainstorming ideas, and after brainstorming i came up with 5 ideas, which are : 

  • Personification of Taylors University, L2D 
  • Personification of Bhineka Tunggal Ika
  • Personification of Iconic flowers in Indonesia 
  • Personification of Indonesian Iconic Flora & Fauna.
  • Art book collaboration with Fashion Design student 

After finalizing the direction for our project, we were tasked with creating proposal slides to outline the process and deliverables. We were encouraged to step outside our comfort zones to enhance our portfolios and better showcase our skills. However, since I haven't completed much of my specialization major yet, I feel a bit nervous about taking on something entirely unfamiliar. For example, I haven’t explored 3D design, so that would be quite challenging for me.

Instead, I’ve decided to focus on an area where I have more expertise, while still expanding the scope by adding additional deliverables. I’m also considering incorporating something innovative, like an interactive webpage or an artbook copy. To further enrich the project, I’d like to explore collaborating with other majors as well.

Character Design

After finishing with my proposal i proceed to work on my project which is the personification of Iconic Flowers in Indonesia or you can also call by Puspa Bangsa, into a game character. I was thinking about Splatoon as references because i really like the character design and character anatomy so far. 

So i began on looking for references for my characters which are Jasmine, Orchid and Raflesia 

Jasmine

For Jasmine i always imagine jasmine to be very elegant and pretty and we mostly see how Jasmine are used not only as a scent, decorations, but also used in most of the Javanese traditional attires, so i decide to gave her a Javanese attire and with the color palette of brown, yellow, white and green, she wasn't really hard to design however, she is full of complex patterns, so its kind of making it hard for me afterwards hehe.

Rafflesia

I struggled a bit when it comes to Rafflesia to be honest, i was pretty confused on how i wanna design him at first, I asked for some opinion from the lecturer and the lecturer was like, try to dissect the flower and maybe put any of the elements that was in the flower into the design so i did just that, i add rafflesia flower on top of his head, and added freckles and tattoo, resembling the patterns in the rafflesia flower, other than that since the color palette were mostly red, it reminds me of the attires in Sumatra, which is where I'm from so I also put him on an attire that was inspired from Medan.

Orchid

When i say i struggled with Rafflesia, i lied, i struggled even way more with orchid, i was thinking of making orchid into a child like character, so to find a traditional attire and make it a children version of it, but in the end i just make her outfit based on the flower itself, i dissected the flower and make each of the flower part into the clothes, for example the small flower thing in the middle of the flower, i turned it into a necklace, and the leaf as her hand.

At first i was pretty ambitious, I wanted to make an L2D and 3D of them but then with the time i have and only being able to focus on my other assignments and keep on delaying my progress for this assignment i can only came up with character sheet, character design and a splash art.

originally the deliverables that i would like to provide were Character sheet, Character design, splash art, 3D or Character animation, and a educational website for the three characters. and again i only could come up with character sheet and splash art. 

so, I finalized the character design and also finalize other stuff such as character sheet and splash art, i did rafflesia first because he's one of my favorite so i would like to go all out.

Character Splash Art
I start working with the splash art, and begin with Rafflesia first, because i love Rafflesia design the most among everyone hehe, so i began looking for poses reference,  i wanna look for something really fiery and powerful that screams power and itching for a fight, because rafflesia originally is a character that is always itching for a fight and likes battles, and here are the progress.

So far i like how it turned out but by the time i finished with Rafflesia i had no time to do Orchid and Jasmine so i just have Rafflesia as it is. and that is my final deliverables, i really regret not being able to finish the rest due to time and procrascination :'), but its ok, i shall continue the rest for the final project.

Character Design 
  • Dissect all the flowers and use what you can find on the flower as the character features.
  • Add your culture into the design

Reflection

To be honest, Design exploration is the most neglected module in this semester cause i focused too much on the other module and finish the rest rather than this one, which makes me not being able to give all of the deliverables that i had planned in the beginning, other than that is probably i struggle with finalizing the actual design. 

Since i wasnt done with my other module which is 3D designing i also could not provide other deliverables other than the one that i had done, which is just character design, I haven't even done my anatomy class lmao,  but either way this module is actually really interesting and really fun cause you had the freedom with your ideas, but bringing the ideas to life however is not the best part HAHAHAH.

I guess this is like a preparation for final year project assignment, so im gonna take a mental note that when im doing the final year project i should really really really focus on my ideas , and tbh it made me start coming up with what i want to come up with on final project and start grinding on the ideas. :')
