Task 3 : Type Design & Communication

" You will be tasked to design a limited number of western alphabets. To begin, choose an existing font design that adheres to the direction that you would like to head in. Study the font carefully by analysing its anatomical parts. Start with rough sketches, explore a variety of options and upon approval begin digitization of the drawings—software for digitization Adobe Illustrator and later FontLab. Artworks shall be printed out for critique sessions followed by refinements.

You will endeavour to create a typeface that has the hallmarks of a good typeface; subtlety or character, presence, legibility and readability. Below are the letters you will design: a e t k g r i y m p n ! # , . Upon completion of the font, you will create a basic A4 size poster displaying your font ".

1. Research

Figure 1.1 Typography Cheat Sheet

Figure 1.2 Anatomy of typography.

Before starting with the assignment, i learnt about the anatomy of typography while watching the lecture Mr.Vinod gave us in the youtube playlist (Typo Task 3A Typeface Construction (Shapes)).
one thing to note is that we have to pay attention to the following points, Such as :
  • Ascender height
  • Capital height
  • Mean/median line
  • Baseline
  • Descender line

2. Sketches

In class we were instructed to bring 5 types of Pens and a graph paper to write :

  • diagonal, horizontal, vertical and circular lines for all 5 tools in 5 different ways for each tool
  • AOTMX for all 5 tools in 5 different ways for each tool
Figure 2.0 Example of Patterns.

Result :

Figure 2.1 Results of the patterns using 5 different pens [Week 7 16/05/2023]

from all the pens and patterns we made, we must select 1 option from the 5 different options from each tool and write "a e t k g r i y m p n" in the selected style. so i started choosing which style i liked the most.

Figure 2.2 The chosen "a e t k g r i y m p n" [Week 7 20/05/2023]

i couldn't choose 1 from all the different options, however, i favor the first, third and fourth the most, so i selected all the three of them and try to explore and practice writing in that style.

Figure 2.5 The chosen "a e t k g r i y m p n" (Liner) [Week 9 28/05/2023]

in the end i prefer the sharpie and the marker the most, however after getting feedbacks and looking at my peers works, i feel like the option of the font that i chose are not tidy and not sitting on the baseline. so i tried experimenting again to make the font a little more neat than the first one.but i feel like i didn't explore much on the font so i tried experimenting to add more options into the one i would like to choose to digitalize, so instead of choosing lowercase letters , i tried uppercase letters and try to see if it looks better.

Figure 2.7 The chosen "a e t k g r i y m p n" (Marker) [Week 9 30/05/2023]

And at the end i prefer Marker B the most so i chose the fig.1.8 as the font that i will digitalize.

3. Digitalization

3.1 ADOBE ILLUSTRATION
  • I wasnt able to attend the class when Mr.Vinod was teaching everyone on how to do the digitalization (i started to feel unwell around that time), so i watched the Livestream and following the video Mr.Vinod provided in the playlist to start with digitalization.
Figure 3.0 Making Guidelines [Week 9 30/05/2023]

Following the tutorial Mr.Vinod provided in the playlist, i start on making the guidelines, the font that i chose that are similar to the ones i made is Gill Sans Std (Bold Condensed).

Height of letters :
  • Ascender line : 740.68 pt
  • Cap line : 740.68 pt
  • Median line : 506.3 pt
  • Baseline : 0 pt
  • Descender line : -234.38pt
I start by tracing the image of the font i made on the graph paper using the brush tool.

after making all the fonts i start making the symbols [. , ! #] in adobe, at first i try looking for references before making the symbols and watched the video Mr.Shared in facebook

3.2 FONTLAB
  • I start exporting the font to fontlab just as instructed in the video tutorial, there was alot of difficulties and confusion in the process of putting into the fontlab, but with the help of my peers, im starting to get a hang of it. i start by copying and pasting the font from ai to font lab and proceed with the kerning afterwards.

Feedback

Week 7 :
  • General Feedback :  make sure to use the same strokes, and the same angle of pen and how you write.
Week 9 :
  • General Feedback : stay consistent with the typefaces and if you stay with one position when writing the typeface stay with the same position of the pen/paper , do not change it.
Week 10 :
  • COVID-19 :(
Week 11 :
  • Quarantined
Week 12 :
  • General Feedback : Make sure to kern the fonts on your poster, textures are allowed as long as its faint, make sure to make it not to small, make sure people can read and make the poster as impactful as you can, NO graphical elements on posture and black , white , grey color only.

Reflection

  • Experience : this assignment is different than the task 1 and task 2, it was kind of more fun to do than the previous task one. ive always wanted to make my own so to learn about the basic here is pretty interesting in some way.

  • Observations : its nice to see my peers version of type fonts and how unique and great each of them, you have to pay attention to the small details , basically its just like illustrations, i can put this observation into illustrating too

  • Findings : i figured that creating fonts is not just designing letters, you have to pay attention to the details and the anatomy to make it a good font, cause if you just design without knowing the basic and the anatomy it wouldnt really be a great font.
