TYPOGRAPHY TASK 2 / Typographic Exploration & Communication
Lectures
WEEK 5 : [02/05/2023]
Summary
On week 5 Mr.Vinod gave us another feedback on the task.1 text formatting, He gave us some time to fix our assignment in the class and gave us a brief explanation about our new assignment which is Typographic Exploration & Communication.
Lecture : Typography - Understanding Letterforms

Uppercase Letter
Uppercase letter forms may appear symmetrical but they are actually not in closer inspection. Some mild differences are made to strokes or serifs to create optical illusion and make them look visually equal weight.
Small details that made Baskerville A look symmetrical
Subtle differences made a huge impact in readability and also the appearance of a letter form.
When designing your own font, remember to:
- NOT changing all the features of the letter form, it will only lead to decorative fonts that is oversophisticated.
- Instead, simplify the characteristics within the strokes of the letters and replicate the unique feature consistently in all the letter forms.
- Analyse an existing typeface, examine the treatment of a particular letter ('s' and 'g') in different typefaces
Maintaining x-height
Curved stroke such as 's' MUST always rise above median line and sink below baseline in order to appear same size as vertical and horizontal strokes they adjoin.

Curved stroke rise above median line
Letters such as 'o' and 's' have lesser real estate touching the median and baseline, therefore they appear smaller. To compensate for that, optical adjustment has to be done.
WEEK 6 : [09/05/2023]
Summary
On Week 6 Mr.Vinod had already started giving feedbacks for Typographic exploration & Communication, i didnt got a specific feedback however i got some general feedback that i can apply to my own assignment which is :- Avoid using contrasting backgrounds, such as a black background on top and white at the bottom, Ensure consistent margin spacing throughout , Work on improving the type expression , Utilize a canvas size of 200x200 , Ensure that the body text and line length are consistent , Choose only one word from the headline to visualize.

Lecture : Typhography - Screen&Print
The more senses used the more holistic the development is during learning. Print cannot be replaced easily by screen because touch and feel is a huge part of the learning process.
Good typefaces for print are Caslon, Garamond and Baskerville. These typefaces are elegant, intellectual and highly readable when set at small font size. Their neutrality and versatility make typesetting with them easy.
Typefaces that are intended for screen are optimized and modified to enhance the readability and performance on-screen. Verdana and Georgia are good examples of typeface designed for screen. DO NOT use them on paper!!! There is no clear-cut rule in typography and most of the time it's subject to the sensibility of the designer.
Hyperlink
A word, phrase or image that can be clicked on to jump to a new document or new section. Normally blue and underlined by default.
Font size for screens
Text printed on books is usually set at 10 pt because we read them pretty close. If we were to read them at arm's length, we'd want it at least 12 pt which is equivalent to 16 pix on-screen.
Typography is fundamental in every design discipline. Hence, having a good sense of typography will go a long long way.
Instructions
Module Information BookletTask 2: Text Formatting and Expression
In this project it will be a mix between the First and Second Exercise in the task 1. we need to combine text expression as a title and text formatting into one so it will become some sort of an article/magazine. images are not allowed however minor graphical elements are allowed. the software that we will be using is InDesign and Adobe Illustrator. just like the task 1, Type expression will be done in Ai and Text formatting will be done in InDesign.\
Before i began with my work i do some research on the internet for references and inspiration, the website i go to find inspiration are the Behance.net . in there i could find alot of layouts examples and various things. i start sketching out my ideas after getting some references and also the text that i will be choosing is the " Unite to visualise a better world "
Visual Research
Sketches
after researches i got from the internet i started to sketch the layout digitally.
Digitalization
- First i tried on making the type expression first on Ai to see which one that i can work on and which one that i will like the most.
After alot of thinking and some inputs and summarizing the general feedbacks i have i decide to choose the first layout. i adjusted a few things and removed the extra visual element near the headline.
Headline
Typefaces - ITC New Baskerville Std (Roman) 102pt / ITC New Baskerville Std (Roman) 51pt
Sub-headline
Point size - 14pt
Leading - 16 pt
Paragraph spacing - 16pt
Body texts
Point size - 9pt
Leading - 12pt
Paragraph spacing - 12pt, 4.233 mm
Feedback
- General Feedback : Avoid using contrasting backgrounds, such as a black background on top and white at the bottom, Ensure consistent margin spacing throughout , Work on improving the type expression , Utilize a canvas size of 200x200 , Ensure that the body text and line length are consistent , Choose only one word from the headline to visualize.
- General Feedback : Use better fonts , DO NOT USE BODONI.
Reflection
- Experience : After the task 1 , i can see myself being familiarized with the assignment, however i still dont find enjoyment on doing this subject unlike the other two subject (IVN and Digital Photography). Maybe i am still not immersed into the Typography world yet, but i believe maybe sooner or later it will be fun just like the other subjects.
- Observations : Its interesting to see how different each students designs are and how unique it is, i find it really hard to find some references and how to start with my own but after getting some advices from my peers i started to get on what to start working on my work.
- Findings : I figured out that Aesthetics and looks does not matter in typography as much as readability are. its interesting that by doing things to the text can actually help you and the reader to read it better and easily. Now i can see why text formatting are very important.
