INFORMATION DESIGN / PROJECT 1 :
INSTRUCTABLE INFOGRAPHICS POSTER

Instructions

An infographic poster for ONE recipe selected from Pasta Grannies. Study one video, break down, and chunk the preparation and cooking process into an instructable poster. Try to capture each Grandma’s personality and unique dish identity in your poster as part of the narrative structure.

These infographics present complex information quickly and clearly, with symbols charts, and diagrams. With an information graphic, computer scientists, mathematicians, and statisticians develop and communicate concepts using a single symbol to process information.

Your job is to transmit a set of instructions and at the same time educate the audience. Infographics should be fun, it should simplify the context while representing information graphically.

Because “A picture is worth a thousand words”. Yours should reflect the following:
  • To transmit or communicate a message.
  • To present large amounts of information in a compact and easy-to-understand way.
  • To reveal the data. Discovering cause-effect relations, knowing what’s happening.
  • To periodically monitor the evolution of certain parameters.
You will develop an infographic to communicate a concept, topic, or idea - IN THIS CASE A COMPLETE SET INSTRUCTION TO A RECIPE.
The infographic should take viewers visually through the information you want them to learn or know. Based on your infographic the audience should be able to learn through viewing and interpreting the various graphical information and text.

You will be required to evaluate what parts of the topic, concept, or idea are most important to tell/demonstrate and ask how you would represent each piece of information best. You will also decide how to graphically represent the most salient facts about your topic, concept, or idea for student learning. This includes the finishing outcome which could be a slick animation or even a rough stop motion.

Theoretical (Information Design Framework)
  • Information type
  • Device
  • Principles (LATCH etc)
  • Aesthetics i.e: isometric, simplified illustrations
Requirement: You will need to reflect the following (assessment criteria):
Practical - photo editing/illustration software
  • Graphs, charts, and diagrams
  • Poster size: 1240 × 1750 pixels or 2048 × 2048 pixels

PROGRESS

I Start off by researching the video on the Pasta Grannies channel, i decided to pick the [
91 year old Maria shares her lasagna recipe with Pasta Grannies!]

Figure 1.0 Video

Afterwards, i start writing down the informations that are needed to be placed into the poster

Maria passed away on 12 December 2021 aged 92; this video was made in 2020. She made this lasagna for her customers to take away. Over the years she adapted the recipe and the result is a green lasagna, layered with a pork ragù and béchamel sauce. This is Maria's second appearance for Pasta Grannies!

Adjusted to feed 4 -6 people:
For the pasta:
  • 250g plain flour
  • 110 g eggs
  • 30 g fresh spinach, leaves only

For the ragù:
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • 3 sage leaves (wrapped in muslin)
  • 200g unsmoked pancetta, diced
  • 1.5 kg minced pork (loin or shoulder)
  • 1.5 litre beef stock
  • 1 heaping tbsp of tomato paste 400 g passata
  • Salt, pepper

For the béchamel:
  • 30 g butter
  • 30 g flour
  • 1/2 litre whole milk
  • 1/2 a nutmeg, grated

For sprinkling:
  • 50g Parmigiano (or more, if you feel like it)

Instructions:

1. Mix the spinach leaves with the flour thoroughly. Then, add the eggs and knead your dough. Use a rolling pin to roll your dough into a big sheet of pasta dough.

2. To make the ragù, you will have to fry the pancetta, then add the meat and mix well. Pour in some more olive oil so the meat doesn’t stick to the pot. Wrap the chopped garlic cloves and sage leaves in muslin, and add them in the pot, so that you can easily remove them later on. Season the sauce and add the meat stock to cover the meat. Add the tomato paste and let the sauce simmer for at least an hour.

3. Warm the milk. In a saucepan, add the butter and flour to make the roux. Once combined, add the milk gradually making sure there are no lumps in the mixture, whisking all the time.

4. Cut the pasta dough into rectangular lasagna. Boil the pasta for two minutes in boiling salted water.

5. Assemble the dish. In a baking dish, place some tablespoons of the meat sauce and then top that with pasta. Add more meat sauce, bechamel and parmesan cheese. Repeat until you have seven layers, then add some diced butter on top. Bake in a moderate oven for twenty minutes.

After finding all the things that i needi start by sketching the layout.

Once satisfied with my layout i started working on the poster

  • None are given.

Reflection

  • This assignment is pretty fun, i love making posters so it was really an enjoyable learning experience, however trying to make the instructions as simple as possible is pretty hard, this was pretty much the simplest i can come up with and i hope that its clear enough ;;
