Lectures

Composition

1. Focal Point
  • A key element for good composition, helps and guide the viewers eyes to settle on the important pieces of your design.

2. Scale and Hierarchy

  • Often used to help communicate hierarchy by drawing attention toward and away from certain elements

3. Balance the Elements

  • Smaller objects might ‘weigh’ less than larger objects
  • heavily textured elements might ‘weigh’ more than flatly colored elements.

4. White Space

  • Also known as "empty space” that balance up the main focus of a composition.
  • Can help boost your design’s clarity and overall look by balancing out the more complicated and busy parts of your composition with space that helps your design to breathe.

5. Rule of Thirds

  • The process of dividing an image into thirds, using two horizontal and two vertical lines. This imaginary grid yields nine parts with four intersection points.
  • Produce a more natural image when you position the most important elements of your image at the intersection points.
  • Suggested horizon to be placed on either the top horizontal line or bottom horizontal line.
  • Examples:
Fig.1.1 Rule of Thirds Example

The Rule of Thirds is a way to:
  • Use composition techniques that are in line with what’s naturally pleasing to the eye.
  • Creatively use negative space.
  • Create conversation between the subject and background.

6. Golden Ratio

Fig.1.2 The Golden Ratio
  • A mathematical ratio that is commonly found in nature.
  • when used in a design, it fosters organic and natural-looking compositions that are aesthetically pleasing to the eye.

Final Outcome

Fig 1.7 Final Outcome

After getting a feed back from Mr.Fauzi on Week 4, i chose the second pre-composition and glued all of it all together in class.

Feedback

  • Mr.Fauzi said he likes the First and Second composition and he told me to choose between those two which one i like the most, for me i like the Second composition most because its simple and Aesthetically pleasing.

Reflection

  • This week assignment is actually fun, I get to have a nostalgia trip on cutting papers and making it into a collage just like what I do when I was young with pics art. This assignment also helps me understand a lot more about composition and in the future I will start making collages edit again.
