Week 4

On week 4, we were taught about visual analysis and assigned to choose our reference and topic from The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the topic that I picked is gender equality {focusing on justice/freedom on women}. we were instructed to write a visual analysis 300 - to 350-word visual analysis of the selected design. and lastly making a final blog to end our first short semester.

Visual Analysis

fig 1.1 - Justice tarot card art (Pinterest)

fig 1.2 - Art representing about justice for woman (Pinterest)

The reason why i pick this design is that i have an interest in tarot and how each of them has meaning in them, Women face injustices such as being withheld from receiving an education, forced into marriages, being victims of physical and/or sexual violence, and gender pay, which is why i pick the justice tarot card to promote justice for woman.

Observation:

This is a tarot art representing justice, on figure 1.2 a figure of a person in the middle holding a scale, she is holding hands with the other woman representing other races and religions, and there are people on the sides complaining and protesting about what the woman are doing and whatever theyre wearing, the colors of the people on the sides are the same (plain red) to make sure the main focus is on the middle or on the line of womens, and theres a principle of design applied on the art which is repetition and movement, alot of plain colors for the ground, background, and the people, just to focus on the middle part of the art.

Analysis:

This is a top-focused design work, The Justice Tarot card is a monochromatic line art piece that features Lady Justice, and a relatively symmetrical composition. The emphasis of the art piece is on the eyes, which are covered by a wooden branch looking blindfold, emphasizing that Lady Justice is blind. The background is comprised of both feathers and lines, which makes a lot of noise, diverting focus to the head especially the closed eyes, then the body. Lady Justice's blindfold is a symbol that justice should not be based on a person's appearance or other outside influences. The sword she holds signifies that justice is harsh and strict, while the scale represents that justice is fair. The feathers or angelic wings suggest that justice is a savior, while the halo-like lines convey that justice is holy and virtuous. The borders of the card are perfect and not too obstructive, allowing for the text to be well placed. Overall, the Justice Tarot card is a well-composed work of art that effectively conveys the various attributes of Lady Justice through its use of monochromatic line art, symmetrical composition, and repeated motifs.

Interpretation:

This is a modern art about justice and the figure 1.2 is a drawing of basically all of the women who have to face alot of injustice every day, Women's access to justice is a legal and constitutional framework that guarantees women's rights, but without education, awareness of rights and decision-making power, women are often unable to claim their rights, obtain legal aid or go to court, the Justice card in reading is to seek balance and truth and to make decisions accordingly, with radical honesty, accountability, and fairness, which is really the main thing we need in woman rights.
this design is telling people that alot of women stand together to fight injustice and no matter how they try people will always complain and always riot against what woman wants to do, the art also reminds people to stand for another woman who faces inequalities cause you're not alone

Visual Research

When i was finding the topics i want to choose, i was wondering what i should do because i saw alot of interesting topic, at first maybe i should do something about global warming , but then i saw that alot of the other students had chosen that topic so i would like to pick something different.

Then i saw a topic about gender equalities as one of the goals and immediately think about justice for women, i tried to find what could represent justice for the woman and i remember playing this game called persona, and there's this tarot card called Justice, The concept about tarot really interest me so i would like to put these concepts into my design, i start to research for references and found the one that i like.

The Justice card indicates that the fairest decision will be made. why i choose justice among all tarot card? because injustice is one of the main chamber why women are look down upon, alot of people thinks that woman are incapable of doing the things other people can do, Justice tarot card represents the rule of law, fairness, justice, and truth. You are being held responsible for your actions and will bear the consequences. You should not be concerned if your actions were in accordance with your Higher Self and for the benefit of others.

My idea is to create my own version of justice tarot card, but with adding more feminine concepts such as flower and womb, and i would like to draw a nude statue drawing. at first i would like to add the art deco concept into the drawing but maybe it would not fit with the greek statue concept, so im following the concept of art nouveau, i looked for inspirations on pinterest and here are the artworks that i got for reference.

fig 2.1 - Justice for women (Pinterest)

fig 2.2 - flowers and womb (Pinterest)

fig 2.3 - statue with wings (Pinterest)

these are basically the main things that i want to combine in one artwork, flower and womb for a sign for femininity, wings for freedom (or to fly, or to be free from all burdens), and Justice card.

Design Process & Idea Exploration

The things that I would like to put on my design are a woman with a scale, wings, blindfold / eyes closed, flowers, a womb, a statue, and marble as the background for greek aesthetics. i've found my references of materials and elements from Pinterest, and here are the stuff i uses as references to be added to the design.

fig 3.1 - Brushes texture (Pinterest)

fig 3.2 - marbles references (Pinterest)

fig 3.3 - Womb and Flowers to represent Femininity (Pinterest)

fig 3.4 - inspiration for black and white painting (Pinterest)

with all these materials i found i started my progress using my drawing application called Medibang, i started the progress by following this reference i found from Pinterest.

fig 3.5 - Poses reference (Pinterest)

fig 3.6.1 - the first sketch

i start by drawing the pose and then after drawing the poses i start with drawing the hair and the wings, at first i want to draw her with tied-up hair just like the woman im referencing which is Lady Eboshi, but then i feel like long hair feels more majestic and fresh.

fig 3.6.2 - second sketch adding scale and labels of card

then i added scale in the background, the scales represent weighing facts and evidence to decide a verdict (balance) and then i start to fill out the bottom part with the womb and flowers to make it less empty.
fig 3.6.3 -  third sketch adding the womb

after adding the womb i added a concentration line effect into the drawing to make it more dramatic and to point the focus into the woman in the middle

fig 3.6.4 - fourth sketch after adding concentration line

and then i start cleaning out the sketch lines to make it more cleaner and to begin with rendering

fig 3.6.5 - cleaning up sketch

at first i was confused on how should i start on rendering my art, i wanted to leave it just like fig 3.6.5 , but after asking feedbacks from my friends who learn art too, they told me to render it to make it look better.
fig 3.7.1 - after rendering

i tried rendering in a painting style and i want to make it even more like a statue like, and then i start rendering the womb and flowers too, at first i want to color the womb and flower part with lots of bright colors but then it will be super contrasting with black and white woman figure so i decide to just continue with black and white.

fig 3.7.2 - after coloring the womb and flowers

i didnt want to overdo the rendering on the bottom part cause the middle part is dramatic enough, causei want the main focus to be on the woman so i wont be overdoing much with the background stuffs, and then i continue with coloring and adding a marble effect on the background.

fig 3.7.3 - after coloring scale and editing on the words

fig 3.7.4 - after adding marble effects on the background

i couldn't decide which words will suit the design more to promote justice for woman so i made alot of different alternatives, and asked my friends for feedback and opinion on which i should choose and which gave the best impression/meaning.

Final Outcome

fig 4 - final outcome "Woman Justice"

For my final outcome, i added a few things to emphasize the justice by adding a "Justice for Woman", this is a painting of a woman representing justice, if i could draw justice as a woman i would imagine she would look just like this woman i drew, the person i was referencing her from is Lady Eboshi from an animated movie called Princess Mononoke she is a very elegant, independent and strong woman, and also is a Town Leader of a place called Iron Town, she faced a lot of injustice in her life and understand how unfair it is for another woman, she helps women who were forced to work in brothels, fed then and clean them well, everyone in the town admired her and so do i. she proves that not only men can do heavy duty work, women does not only sit and look pretty, they can also work and do things.

The womb and the flowers represent femininity and the wings represent as freedom cause woman should have freedom of choice on what they want to choose or to do, the scales of justice are about fairness in court cases, i pick this pose because this pose makes her look confident, especially she is crouching on top of something so she looks tall but at the same time small, to show that she is strong yet not threatening.

The principles i put into my design are unity and pattern, i wanna make sure that the design look just like a nude statue but i guess i still have alot to learn but i did my best, at the end i decide to pick the La "Justice, woman truth of liberty" for the final outcome.

Feedbacks

Week 4: The concept and the visual analysis is great and i can proceed

Week 5: the design is okay, but i need to explain more about my elements and the meaning, about who the woman i drew, explain my drawing so that people who view my work could understand about the things i want to implement into my design

Week 7: i feel like i wanted to leave it as it is (see fig 3.6.5) but then i think that i should render it more and edit a few thing with the words and finally i am satisfied with the result.

Reflection for the week

on the final project, ive learn about alot of things especially how to observe an image and see what are the elements and break it down each by each, to understand and create a work that has meaning and to show that an artwork isnt just a drawing, yet could also be a language, something that doesnt need to be spoken but understood.

i get to also tell people about how to be more aware about this topic cause this topic is pretty crucial especially in lots of country, especially mine (which are mostly very strict when it comes to religion and stuff), to express how i feel about this problem. this projects also helps me to learn more to understand about design principles on every design.

i really enjoy doing exercises and the projects, cause i get to experiment with lots of poses and concept! maybe next time i should start with coloring other than just black and white, i have always been fond of drawing in black and white and maybe in the future i could experiment with colors. i also get to experiment thru asking for feedback from the lecturer and friends, which really helps me to improve even and understands what i should change in the future, hopefully i can improve even more in the future by learning here!
