Week 1

In the beginning of the week, we were told to watch the videos about the 9 principles of design by Mr. Charles and made a blog.

After learning about the topic, repetition and movement caught my eyes and interest me most because we apply this principles when it comes to making animation and comics / making an image comes to life.

As according to the assignment i have to select two design and make 1 design for each principle that i have chosen, the design that i've chosen are : Repetition and Movement. here's a short recap from what i learn.

Repetition: creates rhythm and pattern within the work which increases visual excitement by enriching surface interest. variety is essential.

Movement: a design that leads your vision to make the object seem to be moving in a visual image.

Hierarchy: direct viewers to the most important information first.

Alignment : placement of elements that creates sense of unity and cohesion.

Visual Research

Repetition

repetition are simply repeating an element to create a unity within the work of art, making the art looks active in creating rhythm.

pattern is an element that are repeated over and over.

rhythm refers to the relationship between elements in the piece and how they interact together creating a feeling of organized movement, rhythm keeps everything exciting.

variety adds changes to disrupt the monotony of a composition.

Movement

Movement means guiding the user’s eye to a predetermined path in a composition.

Visual hierarchy involves arranging various graphical elements in a specific way to convey their order of importance.

the alignment principle states that multiple objects are said to be aligned when they are placed such that their left or right edges, or center-lines line up on a common position.

Design Process & Idea Exploration

fig 3.2 - inspiration from pinterest

i got an inspiration from a manga because whenever i think of movement and repetition i think about animation process and manga, and i would like to make it more nicer to look and edgy-ish and this is the inspiration i took for my assignment

the first sketch for repetition (fig 3.3) was inspired by this picture below, i was trying to go for this style but i changed my mind after receiving a feedback from Mr. Charles

Feedbacks

When i first ask for feedbacks from Mr. Charles he asked me what i think about it, and he asked me to explain my choice of subject matter to exploit repetition. at first i didn't get it but then i asked him again in the class and i started to understand what he meant by that.

after he asked me what i think about my first sketch, i changed my mind about making the previous sketch and maybe draw two design that look related so it wont be too different.

Reflection

after the exercise given, i started to understand art alot more better, all these principles helped at making art looks more unique, and makes me understand art alot more better in other perspective. not to mention, Mr.Charles are really nice too and he gives feedback and helped his students understand things whenever things are not clear. i think i need to be more disciplined and not procrastinate to have more time to do the assignment and show a better version of my art.

this lecture really helped me to learn more about art and about visuals for me, before learning this i usually draw whatever "looks good" without thinking about the details and the stuff about it. i think i will start to apply all these principles on art starting from now until the future!
